"I can ride, but would like some help with bike handling, and want to learn to ride on the road."
Traffic Skills is an 8-hour course. It consists of practical tips & strategies and on-bike training to allow you to increase your safety and comfort in traffic — even if you've never ridden on the road before!
The emphasis is on being at ease in traffic, detecting and avoiding potential hazards, choosing proper lane positioning and negotiating with other road users and pedestrians. You will also learn how to make your bike more comfortable to ride and what clothing & accessories are worth having.
In an enjoyable, supportive atmosphere, you will learn how to do all of the following:
- Choose a bike and helmet, adjust them to fit you, and check them for safety
- Do shoulder-checks and signal while controlling your bike
- Shift and brake safely and confidently
- Make turns while controlling the bike and being aware of your surroundings
- Ride for comfort and efficiency
- Change a flat tire, and adjust your bike's brakes and shifters
You will then learn proven techniques for riding safely and comfortably in traffic:
- Increase your visibility to others
- Recognize and avoid potential hazards
- Increase your safety while following the rules of the road
- Choose the best lane position
- Navigate intersections and other roadway elements
- Negotiate and interact well with other road users
- Plan your routes
- Choose clothing and accessories for riding in various weather conditions
- ...and more
What you learn will be put into practice on a carefully chosen route, accompanied by one or more skilled, experienced cycling instructors.
